Reader’s Question:

Hello! My fiancé, Jeff, is a great guy and a hard worker, but he is a smoker. I am working on that! I am also helping to plan our financial future. Is there such a thing as smoker’s insurance in New Jersey?

Madeline

Bayonne, NJ

Congratulations Madeline!

It seems like you are starting off on the right foot. It would be great if you could help Jeff stop smoking. Life insurance for smokers is always available in New Jersey. Generally, it is more expensive than insurance for non-smokers. It is safe to say that use of tobacco products will classify Jeff as a smoker in terms of life insurance.

If you and Jeff are successful with his smoking cessation, his life insurance rates will change. You might want to develop a life insurance strategy based on his good intentions. In the insurance industry, smokers are rewarded for stopping. Not only will Jeff feel better, he’ll be able to have more insurance at less cost.

As you consider life insurance, you and Jeff will be asked about your use of tobacco. To develop the correct strategy for your future, you should accurately portray Jeff’s usage. This will help your representative develop a life insurance plan that covers Jeff before and after he stops smoking. Again, congratulations to you both for your upcoming marriage and also for planning ahead for your financial security and well being.

Reader’s Question:

I am looking for the cheapest life insurance policy in New Jersey. Do you have any suggestions for credible sources?

Cynthia

Clifton, NJ

Yes. You can start by searching online. Since the life insurance sector has become very competitive, premium rates have fallen sharply. Most often than not, two or more life insurance companies in New Jersey will most definitely offer varying premiums rates even for exactly the same type of policy.

Tap the internet for the best quotes and compare them. Usually, websites require pertinent information like your age, type of policy needed, amount of coverage and period of coverage. You can try using search engines to get the best details. You can even order right away online for some life insurance companies, which saves you a lot of time than calling life insurance companies and talking to agents. Make sure though that you have done you thorough research before you make any payment.

When you research online, try to grasp as much information as you can on life insurance rates and policies from the best resources in the business based on forums, review ratings, and financial stability of these companies in New Jersey.

Have fun searching!

Reader’s Question:

I currently have two insurance policies and I tend to feel over-insured at the moment due to high premiums. Is there any option for me to pay cheaper life insurance without sacrificing the benefits in New Jersey?

Bill

Elizabeth, NJ

I see your point Bill.

I was once in the same situation in New Jersey. Luckily, I got to meet an insurance agent in my state who gave me an option to get a joint life insurance policy. This option is available on either term or whole life insurance policies. It can be purchased as either “first to die” or “second last to die”.

The joint life policy is a cheap life insurance policy in the sense that it can insure two or more people on the same policy with a premium that is more expensive than insuring just one, but cheaper than having two policies.

What is the difference between “first to die” and “second to die”? In the former, the beneficiary receives the proceeds when the first injured person dies, and the policy is terminated. In the latter, the face value is paid when the second or last insured person dies.

To check availability of joint life in New Jersey, type in your zip code on the form found on this page. Free quotes only. No obligations.

Reader’s Question:

How will I know if a life insurance policy is right for me if the insurance agent in New Jersey recommends a term life policy?

Stephanie

Trenton, NJ

Any agent can recommend policies that he or she thinks will meet your needs. However, you need to closely examine the recommended policy to be sure it fits your needs. Try to understand very well the “policy illustration” which the agent provides. It gives you an understanding of how that policy will work for you. Your agent needs to give a point-by-point explanation.

As a legal document, a life insurance policy needs to be understood by you very well. To verify your term life policy in New Jersey, it is best that you ask the policy’s initial rate guarantee period. Verify if this policy is renewable after the initial guarantee without physical exam. Ask also regarding premiums. Check if this policy is convertible to permanent insurance without undergoing any physical exam and know the period of time for such conversion.

Lastly, you need to check the A.M. Best, Fitch, Moody’s and Weiss Ratings for this New Jersey insurance company that is offering you a term life policy.

I hope this gives you some insight.
